Eco-Friendly Products for Kitchen and Bathroom Remodeling Projects

Eco-friendly refers to designing and remodeling in an efficient and beautiful manner that has as little impact on our environment (household, local and global) as possible

The 4 key areas of eco-friendly design and products are:

Non-Toxicity

This refers to the type of chemicals that have been added to the product. This can include everything from the type of finishes used to the products used in the manufacturing process.

Toxicity can be especially important if there are any health issues in the home – especially asthma or other respiratory conditions.

Non-toxicity involves:

  • Using natural products
  • Non-Added-Urea-Formaldehyde materials
  • Water based finishes
  • Non-absorbent materials

Renewability

Given the strain on our natural and raw resources, renewability is a key factor in eco friendly designs. Fortunately, cabinets are made from wood - a renewable resource. Some woods are renewable much more quickly than others, such as bamboo and lyptus.

All of our cabinet manufacturers are members of the Kitchen Cabinets Manufacturers Association (KCFM) and practice eco-friendly manufacturing.

Renewable kitchen and bath products are made from:

  • Trees
  • Grasses
  • Bamboo, lyptus

Sustainability

Where do the products in your design come from – close to home or from around the world?

Most are made in the US, if not nearby. In the global economy, it is impossible not to have some foreign produced products involved in a remodel. In these cases, we examine the fuel necessary to get them here, etc.

How long will the product last? If it has a lifespan of 20 years vs. 10 years, it is better for the environment – no matter where it comes from.

Sustainability involves considering a product’s:

  • Foot Print
  • Lifespan

Energy Efficiency

How energy efficient are the products used in your remodel? Eco-friendly remodels look at the energy consumption of appliances as well as lighting.

Ultimately, choosing eco-friendly products for your remodel is better for the environment, and it can save you money in the long run, too.
